People often ask us: “If we only had one day here, what should we do?” After years of living in Paleokastritsa, here’s our honest answer — a full day, from morning swim to sunset, the way the locals would do it.
Morning: swim first, everything else later
Start early with a swim at Platakia, just steps from the studios — the water is calmest and clearest before 10:00, and you might have the whole cove to yourself. Afterwards, grab a coffee at one of the cafés nearby and let the day warm up.
Late morning: the Monastery of Paleokastritsa
Walk or drive up to the 13th-century Theotokos Monastery, perched on the headland above the bays. Wander through its flower-filled courtyard, visit the small museum, and take in one of the best views in Corfu. Entrance is free (modest dress required — shoulders and knees covered; wraps are available at the entrance). Go before noon to beat both the heat and the tour buses.
Midday: out on the water
No day here is complete without a boat. Take the classic short trip from the main beach to the sea caves — including the glowing Blue Eye — or rent a small motorboat and find your own private swimming spot along the coast. (We can arrange either; just ask us in the morning.)
Afternoon: long Greek lunch
Do as the Greeks do: a late, unhurried lunch by the water. Fresh fish, tzatziki, horiatiki salad and a cold beer or local white wine. There are excellent tavernas around the bays — ask us for today’s best pick; it depends on the day and the catch.
Late afternoon: drive up to Lakones
Take the winding road up to the village of Lakones, perched high above Paleokastritsa. The viewpoint on the way up — locals call this stretch the “balcony of the Ionian” — offers a postcard panorama of all six bays below. Stroll the narrow village lanes, then find a spot for a drink with a view.
Sunset: the golden hour
For the grand finale, watch the sun sink into the Ionian. The viewpoints around Lakones and the road towards Angelokastro offer front-row seats — or simply head back to your balcony at the studios, pour a glass of wine, and enjoy the show from home.
